Description
Tucked along the east coast of Rhodes, Kathara beach sits a few kilometres south of Afandou, near the road that hugs the shore. The setting is open and fairly exposed, with the turquoise Aegean rolling in under moderate wave conditions — fine for swimming when the sea is calm, but with enough movement to hold interest. The beach itself is narrow in places, backed by low scrub and the occasional tamarisk. The surface is a mix of coarse sand and small pebbles, so a mat or water shoes help. You reach it by turning off the main coastal road onto a paved lane that ends near the shore; parking is roadside and limited to a handful of spaces. There are no facilities whatsoever — no sunbeds, umbrellas, or tavernas — so bring everything you need for the day: water, snacks, shade. The lack of organisation keeps the crowd thin, mostly locals and independent travellers. It is a quiet spot for a peaceful swim or snorkel, but not ideal for families with small children due to the lack of amenities and the moderate waves.
