Description
Metalia sits on the southwestern coast of Thassos, just a short walk from the resort of Limenaria. Its name comes from the large, rust-coloured rock that juts into the sea, a reminder of the island's mining history. The beach itself is a mix of sand and small pebbles, with clear water that shelves gently. Because of its moderate exposure, the sea often has a pleasant chop, good for swimming but not rough. The setting is open, with low scrub and olive groves behind, and the rock formation provides some natural shade in the afternoon. Sunbeds and umbrellas line much of the sand, and a couple of tavernas and a beach bar serve food and drinks. Parking is along the road, so it can be tight in peak season. Families appreciate the shallow entry and the amenities, while those after a quieter spot might head to the eastern end. Snorkelling is rewarding around the rocks, where small fish gather. It can get busy at weekends, but the spread of facilities makes it a convenient, comfortable day out.
