Description
Iconic cove on the NW coast of Zakynthos, enclosed by high limestone cliffs and the wreck of MV Panagiotis. Shore is mostly white limestone pebbles/gravel with some sand; water is typically very clear and intensely blue. Fully exposed to the open Ionian, so wind and swell from the NW often build chop and surge; boat landings are frequently curtailed or cancelled in rough seas. Access to the beach itself is only by boat when permitted; many seasons since 2018/2022 landslides have seen official bans on swimming/approach and time-limited offshore photo stops. A fenced cliff-top viewing platform is reachable by road near Anafonitria, but there are no facilities on the beach. Notable cautions: recurrent rockfalls/landslide risk from the cliffs; periodic government/port-authority closures (including full bans on anchoring, swimming, or setting foot ashore); strong surge and falling rocks make the back of the beach hazardous even in calm weather.
