    The Best Beaches in Skopelos

11 standout Skopelos beaches, from the Mamma Mia sands of Kastani to the pine-backed coves of the sheltered southwest coast, grouped by area, with access and family notes.

Curated by the Beach Atlas team · Updated July 2026

Skopelos is the greenest of the Sporades, an island almost entirely covered in pine forest that runs down to pebbly and sandy coves. Most of its best beaches line the sheltered southwest coast, protected from the summer meltemi. The famous one is Kastani, the main filming beach for Mamma Mia, while Milia is often rated the island's finest, a long arc of sand between green headlands. The pine-backed bay at Panormos and the popular southern beach at Stafylos round out the coast. Browse every verified beach on the island on Skopelos.

Skopelos has fewer sandy beaches than neighbouring Skiathos and more pebble coves, but the water is exceptionally clear and the pine-to-sea setting is the draw. This is a curated best-of rather than the full list; a car helps, as the best beaches are spread along the west and southwest coasts, and some are reached by steps down from the road. Pick a beach below, then use each beach page for access detail before you go.

The southwest coast: Mamma Mia sands and sheltered bays

The southwest is Skopelos at its best, a sheltered run of pine-backed coves. Kastani is the best known, a wide crescent of golden sand that served as the main beach location for Mamma Mia, now organized with a couple of beach bars. Milia, a little further on, is a long, broad arc of sand between low green hills that many consider the island's finest beach. Panormos is a wide, sheltered bay backed by pine-clad hills, and just south of town Stafylos is a popular golden-sand-and-pebble bay, with the quieter, more secluded Velanio just over the headland.

    The northwest coast near Glossa

The northwestern end of the island, around the hilltop village of Glossa, has some of Skopelos's longer sandy beaches. Ftelia is a long sandy beach framed by low cliffs and thick pine forest, with a sheltered feel. Agios Ioannis is a slender arc of soft golden sand backed by fragrant pine that runs right down to the shore. And Limnonari, a short drive south, is a long arc of soft sand lapped by calm, shallow water that suits paddling and families.

    Pebble coves and quiet swims

For clear water and snorkelling, Skopelos's pebble coves are the pick. Plaka is a long pebbly beach at the head of a wide bay, backed by low cliffs and scattered pines. Glysteri, a short drive from town, is a mix of smooth pebbles and coarse sand shelving into clear, calm water. And Armenopetra, on the northeastern coast, is a small sheltered cove of smooth pebbles and rock slabs meeting crystalline water, a favourite for snorkelling.
