    The Best Beaches Near Thessaloniki

12 hand-picked beaches within day-trip reach of Thessaloniki, from the closest Thermaic gulf sands to the coves of Kassandra and Sithonia.

Curated by the Beach Atlas team · Updated July 2026

Thessaloniki has no city beach worth the name, but it has something better: Halkidiki starts less than an hour south. The closest sands on the Thermaic gulf are a 45-minute drive, the resort coast of Kassandra sits at roughly an hour to ninety minutes, and the coves of Sithonia reward a slightly earlier start. This is a hand-picked shortlist of the beaches that repay a day trip from the city, ordered by how far you have to drive. For the full regional inventory, browse every verified beach in Chalkidiki, or see the ranked best beaches in Halkidiki guide.

The quick rule: for the fastest swim, stop at Nea Moudania, Gerakini or Psakoudia before the peninsulas even begin. For an organized family day, drive down Kassandra to Polychrono or Kryopigi. For scenery that earns the extra hour, head into Sithonia for Karydi, Kavourotrypes or the enclosed harbour at Porto Koufo.

Under an hour: the closest sands

The first stretch of Halkidiki coast needs no peninsula commitment. Nea Moudania is the natural gateway: about two kilometres of mostly sandy, gently sloping Blue Flag shore backed by the town promenade, its cafés and tavernas, so the beach day comes with full town amenities. Gerakini, on the Toroneos gulf along the road to Sithonia, is vast and well organized, mixing sand with some pebbly patches and shallow water. Psakoudia sits on the isthmus between the two peninsulas: a long, wide, pine-backed sandy beach with calm, gently sloping water, a repeat Blue Flag holder with a large parking lot.

    Kassandra: the classic first peninsula

Kassandra is the organized, lively option at roughly an hour to ninety minutes from the city. Sani fronts the upscale Sani Resort: a long stretch of white sand against pine forest and a marina, with well-managed services and a large lot. Kryopigi is a long Blue Flag beach with clear water and natural shade from the pine slopes behind it. Polychrono runs about seven kilometres, one of the longest beaches in Halkidiki, with crystal-clear shallow water near the shore that makes it the family default. And Possidi, at the peninsula's western tip, is the scenic one: a sandy spit reaching into open sea, with water on both sides of the bar and an outline that shifts with the currents.

    Sithonia: worth the longer drive

Sithonia asks for an earlier start and pays it back in scenery. Vourvourou faces a bay dotted with small islands, giving parts of the sea a lagoon-like calm, and at the southern end of that bay Karydi is the famous cove: fine white sand and very shallow turquoise water protected from the prevailing winds, with pine trees for shade instead of built facilities. Kavourotrypes is a string of small coves between pines and sculpted white rocks, popular in summer for a reason. Sarti stretches about three kilometres along its village with views across to Mount Athos, Blue Flag most years, with quieter sand away from the organized zones. At the peninsula's southern end, Porto Koufo sits inside a deep natural harbour almost enclosed by rocky slopes, so the water stays calm, though the narrow sandy shore deepens quickly and suits confident swimmers best.
