Milos is a volcanic island, and its coastline is the main event: more than seventy beaches, many of them wild rock formations rather than classic sand. The island's icons are geological. Sarakiniko is a moon-white landscape of wind-smoothed volcanic rock, and Kleftiko is a cathedral of white sea cliffs and caves reachable only by boat. The everyday swimming sand is on the sheltered south coast, at beaches like Firiplaka and Provatas, while the north holds tiny fishing-village coves. Browse every verified beach on the island on Milos.

Wind shapes a Milos beach day more than anything else. The prevailing summer Meltemi blows from the north, so the south-coast beaches stay calm and swimmable while the north and northwest turn choppy; a boat trip around the island is the classic way to reach Kleftiko and the hidden coves. This is a curated best-of rather than the full list; pick a beach below, and use each beach page for access detail, since several need a boat or a scramble.

The volcanic set-pieces: Sarakiniko, Kleftiko and Papafragas

These are the beaches people come to Milos for, more spectacle than sunbathing. Sarakiniko is the island's signature: bright white volcanic rock sculpted into smooth, lunar curves around a small turquoise inlet, unforgettable at sunrise and busy by midday. Kleftiko, on the remote southwest coast, is a maze of white cliffs, arches and sea caves with no road access, visited by boat trip or sea kayak. Papafragas is a tiny strip of sand at the end of a narrow, cliff-lined channel on the north coast, and Tsigrado is a jewel-like cove reached by a rope-and-ladder scramble between the rocks. Bring water shoes and expect little to no shade.

The south coast: sheltered sand and colour

The south coast is where Milos does relaxed swimming, sheltered from the summer Meltemi. Firiplaka is the standout, a long stretch of pale sand beneath banded volcanic cliffs with clear, shallow water. Neighbouring Paleochori sits below multicoloured cliffs and is warmed in places by geothermal activity, with tavernas and water sports on the sand. Provatas is a smaller, golden-sand bay with calm, shallow water that suits families, and Gerakas is a quieter sandy cove backed by tall white cliffs for those willing to go a little further.

    The north coast: fishing-village coves

The north coast is dotted with syrmata, the traditional boathouses cut into the rock, and its beaches are small and characterful. Firopotamos is a postcard cove of mixed sand and pebble in front of a whitewashed fishing hamlet and chapel, with clear water good for snorkelling. Plathiena, near the hilltop village of Plaka, is a sheltered north-facing cove with turquoise water, and Pollonia, on the northeast tip, is a calm crescent village beach with sand, tavernas and the ferry to Kimolos. These are best on a calm day, as the north coast catches the Meltemi.
