    The Best Beaches in Naxos

10 standout Naxos beaches, from the golden sand of Agios Prokopios to the windswept dunes of Mikri Vigla and the cedar coves of Alyko — grouped by coast, with access and family notes.

Curated by the Beach Atlas team · Updated June 2026

Naxos has some of the best beaches in the Cyclades, and many of the famous ones line one long, sandy southwest coast running down from Naxos Town. The town end is where the icons sit, strung together along a continuous stretch: the city beach of Agios Georgios, the golden, turquoise sweep of Agios Prokopios, the fishing-port cove of Agia Anna, and the four-kilometre ribbon of Plaka. Keep heading south and the coast turns wilder and windier, into the dunes and white sand of Mikri Vigla and the cedar-backed coves of Alyko. Browse every verified beach on the island in Naxos.

Agios Georgios is right by town on foot, and Agia Anna has frequent bus service, but a car or scooter opens up the quiet southwest and the remote ends — Kalantos in the deep south and Apollonas in the far north. This is a curated best-of rather than the full list; pick a stretch of coast below, then use each beach page for access detail before you go.

The Naxos Town strip: the easy classics

The beaches just south of Naxos Town are among the island's most popular, and the most convenient — the closest are an easy walk or short bus ride from town. Agios Georgios is the city beach itself, reachable on foot from town, with shallow, sheltered water that stays calm under the prevailing Meltemi and a lagoon at its south end where beginners learn to windsurf. A short way on, Agios Prokopios is the headline act: a long stretch of thick golden sand and crystal-clear turquoise water, sheltered enough at its northern end for genuinely calm swimming. Agia Anna continues the same coast around a small fishing port, fine sand with tavernas and beach bars behind it and frequent buses from town — though the northern stretch can feel breezier and choppier when the Meltemi blows. Plaka runs for around four kilometres of soft white-gold sand — developed and serviced at its north end, wild and near-empty toward the south.

The windswept southwest: dunes and wide-open sand

Past Plaka the coast opens to the Aegean and the wind, which is exactly why some travelers come here. Mikri Vigla is a favourite with windsurfers and kitesurfers, with fine white sand, dunes and headlands and the steady breeze the sport needs — though it still works well for a relaxed family day. Just south, Kastraki is a long, light-sand strand with clear turquoise water and only scattered, low-key beach bars, so bring your own shade on a windy day. Further down, Alyko is one of the most distinctive on the island: a cluster of sandy coves backed by a protected cedar-juniper dune forest, with very clear water over rock patches that make it a great spot for easy snorkeling and coastal walks.

The quiet ends: family coves and remote bays

For peace over crowds, head to the edges of the island. Pyrgaki sits at the quiet end of the southwest coast, a long stretch of fine golden sand with shallow, clear water near shore and a few tavernas — noted as suitable for families and young children. Deeper south, Kalantos is one of the island's more remote beaches, a golden bay sheltered from the northern winds, with shallow crystal-clear water and a wild, undeveloped landscape of wetlands and hills. And far to the north, Apollonas trades a single sweep of sand for a relaxed village vibe: a sand-and-pebble shore beside a small port, with clear turquoise water for a casual swim and the famous ancient Kouros statue nearby.
