    The Best Beaches in Crete

12 standout Crete beaches, from the pink-sand lagoons of Balos and Elafonissi to the palm forest of Vai — grouped by region, with access and family notes.

Curated by the Beach Atlas team · Updated June 2026

Crete is huge — about 250 km end to end — so the best beach for you depends on where you base yourself. The west, around Chania, holds the icons: the pink-sand lagoons of Balos and Elafonissi and the long golden bay of Falasarna. The south coast is wild and exotic, with Preveli's palm-lined river and the cliff caves of Matala. The gentler east, around Agios Nikolaos, is best for families and home to the palm forest of Vai. Browse every verified beach on the island in Crete.

Almost all of them need a rental car, and a couple — Balos and the island of Chrissi — are reached by boat. This is a curated best-of rather than the full list; pick a region below, then use each beach page for access detail before you go.

    West Crete (Chania): the icons

The west holds Crete's most photographed beaches. Balos is a spectacular lagoon of pale, pink-tinged sand and shallow turquoise water on the Gramvousa Peninsula, reached by boat from Kissamos or a rough drive and a walk. Elafonissi is the famous pink-sand lagoon on the southwest tip — iconic and busy, so arrive early. Falasarna is a long, organized bay famous for its sunsets, and the fjord-like pebble cove of Seitan Limania rewards a steep scramble with electric-turquoise water. For an easy family day, Marathi and Blue Flag Almyrida sit on sheltered, shallow bays near Chania.

    South Crete: wild and exotic

The south coast faces the Libyan Sea and feels remote. Preveli sits where a gorge and palm-lined river meet the sea for a genuine tropical-oasis feel; it is unorganized, with a walk down. Damnoni is a clear, sandy cove near Plakias with tavernas and smaller adjoining coves for more seclusion. And Matala is a sandy bay framed by sandstone cliffs riddled with Roman-era caves, internationally famous from its 1960s hippie era, with one of Crete's best sunsets.

East Crete (Lasithi): gentler and family-friendly

The east is calmer and well-suited to families. Vai is backed by the largest natural palm forest in Europe — a backdrop unlike anywhere else in Greece — with shallow turquoise water and fine golden sand. Voulisma, often called Golden Beach, is a small, sheltered Blue Flag cove near Istro that is among the most family-suited on the island. And Chrissi is an uninhabited protected island south of Ierapetra, reached by seasonal day-boat, with tropical-looking shallows and pink-shell sand — bring everything you need, as there are no facilities.
