    The Best Beaches in Kefalonia

11 standout Kefalonia beaches, from the world-famous cliffs of Myrtos to the red-clay sand of Xi and the snorkel coves near Fiskardo, grouped by coast, with access and family notes.

Curated by the Beach Atlas team · Updated July 2026

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands, mountainous and green, and its beaches are defined by dramatic white-pebble bays and clear, deep-blue water. The most famous is Myrtos, a crescent of white pebbles wedged between two vertical mountains and one of the most photographed beaches in Greece. Its western twin is Petani, while the green amphitheatre of Antisamos near Sami is a third dramatic bay. Family sand sits around the Lassi resort at Makris Gialos and the pink-clay Xi, and the green northeast around Fiskardo hides the island's best snorkel coves. Browse every verified beach on the island on Kefalonia.

Kefalonia is large and its beaches are spread across separate coasts and mountain roads, so a car is essential and distances take longer than the map suggests. This is a curated best-of rather than the full list; the famous cliff bays are pebble rather than sand and the water gets deep quickly, so they suit confident swimmers more than toddlers. Pick a beach below, then use each beach page for parking and access detail before you go.

The dramatic pebble bays: Myrtos, Petani and Antisamos

Kefalonia's signature beaches are its cliff-framed pebble bays, spectacular to look at and to swim in. Myrtos is the icon, a long sweep of fine white pebbles between two near-vertical limestone mountains on the northwest coast, with an unforgettable view from the road above and deep, vivid blue water. On the Lixouri peninsula, Petani is its quieter western counterpart, the same tall cliffs and deep blue with a longer, less crowded shore. Across the island near Sami, Antisamos sits in a green amphitheatre of forested hills, with white pebbles and a deep drop-off close to shore; it served as a filming location for Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

The Lassi and south coast: sand and family beaches

For softer sand and shallower water, head to the Lassi area near Argostoli and the south coast. Makris Gialos is the larger of the two Blue Flag Lassi beaches, golden sand and turquoise shallows with full beach-club infrastructure. Xi on the Lixouri peninsula is unlike anywhere else on the island, a long strip of pink-orange clay sand backed by white cliffs that bathers use as a natural mud-mask, with shin-deep water for a long way out. Avithos is a quieter sandy bay south of Argostoli, and the long Blue Flag strip at Skala anchors the southeast coast with shallow, calm water. Further west, Lourdas is a long, half-organized crescent at the foot of Mount Ainos.

The green northeast: Fiskardo's snorkel coves

The northeast tip around the fishing village of Fiskardo is unusually green, and its small pebble coves have the clearest water on the island. Emplisi is a small pebble cove a short way north of Fiskardo with exceptionally clear water and a rocky surround that snorkellers prefer to the busier organized beaches. Foki, just south of Fiskardo, is tucked into a cypress-and-pine grove with shade reaching almost to the water. And Fteri, on the remote northwest coast, is one of the most secluded beaches on the island, a turquoise bay beneath vertical cliffs with no road access, reached on foot or by boat taxi.
